Shoegaze is a subgenre of 1980s/90s indie and alternative rock known for a dreamy, atmospheric sound created by heavily distorted, ethereal guitar effects, reverb, and heavily layered, often buried vocals. Coined by the British press, the term mocks performers who stare at their effect pedals (shoes) during live shows.
